I spent an incredible week in Northern California – sunny, clear skies, beautiful light – and all I could come up with was a picture of a guilty looking dog.

And just then, bathed in early morning sun just cresting the church behind her, the elegantly dressed local and her dust-mop-looking dog made their way through the scene, seemingly oblivious that a bike race was about to start.

Right before the start of Paris-Roubaix, just down from the palace in Compiegne, bathed in early morning sun, this scruffy looking guy was a ball of nervous energy anticipating the riders’ arrival.

Never Quite There

The Northern French countryside has appealed to me since I first drove through it several years ago for my first visit to Paris-Roubaix. But no matter how many times I shoot it I never seem to quite capture how it feels to me. Perhaps if I went back when they weren’t running bike races across it, the French farm fields, small villages, and long winding roads would come into focus. Probably not, though.
