This was one of the last images I took with the one piece of camera equipment I wish I’d held on to. A night street scene in Shanghai, taken with the ever elusive Leica Noctilux attached to a Leica M6. I sold both of them not too long after this trip and while I’ve never particularly missed the M-6 – 35mm film just doesn’t quite do it for me any more – I have totally missed the Noctilux. A collector’s item (I found out later) with an insane 1.0 aperture, I was able to sell it for enough to get a lot of other nice equipment that I use a lot more. But still…..

So where have I been? Learning the new tricks, that’s where. More like expanding the options. It involved a trip across country, crashing really hard in a CX race (harder than I can remember), and buying some pricey software. But in trying not to like or dislike anything, shrugging off preconceptions, it’s been refreshing to integrate the moving zeros and ones into the mix. My feelings still reside with the heavy clack of the shutter and the anticipation of getting the film back from the lab.

This may have been one of the last 35mm film shots I took. Also some in here, part two of the China album. It was a Leica M6 and I sold soon after the China trip. At times I regret it but then when I really think about it I remember that I used it so little. And the proceeds from the sale let me buy 2 “new” Pentax 67 bodies, which, although they break more than a ’69 VW bus, remain my favorite pieces of equipment. Speaking of which, video production is sort of equipment heavy.
